Hillclimb timing and analysis built for one-shot runs
A hillclimb is not a lap with a different start line. You get four runs, the first three seconds decide most of them, the road climbs under the car and the air thins by the top. DashCAN treats a run as a run: measured from the start line along the course, with the launch, the gradient and the atmosphere read out separately from the driver.
Timing a run
- A separate start line and a finish line, with a staging zone so a standing start is detected as a launch and the drive back down is ignored
- Every run measured along the course itself, so two runs line up metre for metre in the analysis
- Runs re-cut in the cloud without touching the recording when a gate was placed wrong on the day
- GPS, IMU and CAN logged on the Apex without the phone, for over two hours
The first three seconds
- Launch analysis
- Time staged, first movement, rollout to the gate, 10, 30, 60 and 100 m splits, 60 and 100 km/h, the rpm held before the clutch came up, wheelspin from a driven-wheel speed on the CAN bus, and a bog when the throttle was open and the car did not go.
- Where the run went
- Each segment of the course scored against your own best ride through it, with a verdict on whether the loss keeps happening or happened once, so practice time goes where it counts.
- The course under the car
- An elevation profile built from every run on the course gives the road grade at every metre. The g-forces the tyres actually deliver on a climb are read against it, and the course strip with segments and grade is the spine of the page.
- Air by the top
- A 300 to 500 m climb costs a naturally aspirated engine 3 to 5 percent of its air. Density, density altitude and the SAE correction are shown start to finish, as context next to the time, never as a fudge on it.
The weekend as one thing
- An event groups practice and timed runs from any number of sessions on one course
- Type in the organiser's times next to ours; after two of them the offset between the beam and the GPS gate is known and the predicted official time of every other run follows
- Mark the segment where the intermediate beam stands, keep pace notes per segment
- Open the whole event in the lap workspace to compare the runs, see the ideal run built from the best of each segment, and paint the course by any channel
