Which ECUs and cars does DashCAN work with? Will it work on my stock car?

DashCAN reads live data from a standalone ECU that broadcasts custom CAN messages, first and foremost the Ignitron ECU. To show the live gauges you import our custom CAN message files into the ECU, so full functionality requires an Ignitron-equipped car.

Without a compatible standalone ECU, DashCAN has nothing to read: the live gauges depend on the custom CAN messages broadcast by the Ignitron ECU, so it won't display data on a stock car. If you're unsure about your setup, contact us before ordering.

What's the difference between DashCAN OBD, Wire-in, Apex and the Keypad, and which should I buy?

All DashCAN interfaces read your CAN bus and stream live data to the app over Bluetooth 5 LE; they differ in how they connect and what extra hardware they add.

  • DashCAN OBD: plugs into an OBD connector; easiest where the powertrain CAN is wired to the OBD port.
  • DashCAN Wire-in: a 4-pin screw terminal for custom installs wired directly to the ECU.
  • DashCAN Apex: everything the interface does, plus a 25 Hz GNSS receiver and 6-axis IMU for automatic lap timing, G-force analysis and DashCAN Cloud telemetry.
  • DashCAN Keypad: an 8-button CAN control pad (RGB backlight, analog/digital inputs, relay output) that keeps all interface features.

Choose OBD or Wire-in for live gauges and logging, Apex for lap timing and GPS/IMU data, and add a Keypad for in-car controls. Check each product page for current availability.

Where do I download the app, is it free, and which devices are supported?

The DashCAN app ("DashCAN - Ignitron ECU") is free on the Apple App Store and Google Play for iOS and Android phones and tablets. It connects over Bluetooth 5 LE, so your device needs Bluetooth Low Energy support.

How does lap timing work on DashCAN Apex (do I need a transponder), and how do I get a good GPS signal?

No transponder is needed. DashCAN Apex uses a 25 Hz multi-constellation GNSS receiver with automatic start/finish detection to time laps and sectors, plus a 6-axis IMU for G-forces, yaw/pitch/roll and acceleration runs (0-100, 100-200 km/h, quarter mile and custom).

For a reliable fix and accurate motion data, mount it as high as possible near the windshield with a clear view of the sky; avoid metal surfaces, the glove box and heated or metal-coated windshields; mount it rigidly and ideally level; and on first use outdoors allow up to a minute to acquire a fix before driving. What is the DashCAN Keypad and does it replace my interface?

The DashCAN Keypad is an 8-button CAN bus control pad with short/long press, customizable RGB backlighting and 50-million-press switches. It also provides 7 analog/digital 0-15 V inputs, a 5 V/500 mA sensor output and a 400 mA relay output.

It keeps all standard DashCAN interface functionality, so it complements your setup rather than replacing your interface.

DashCAN Cloud & your data

What is DashCAN Cloud, how do I get my data into it, and why isn't my session showing?

DashCAN Cloud is a free web telemetry platform at /dashboard where you review your driving data from any device: lap and sector times, an interactive GPS track map coloured by speed, speed/delta/altitude charts, a G-G diagram, corner analysis, multi-lap comparison and XLSX/CSV log export.

Create a free account, then the app uploads your recorded sessions to it. Sync is opt-in, so by default data stays on your device.

If a session isn't appearing: make sure you're logged into the same account in the app and on the website, that the device had internet when uploading, and that the session finished uploading. GPS lap timing and track maps require the GPS/IMU in DashCAN Apex.

Who can see my data, and is my telemetry private?

By default your vehicle data is stored locally on your device and isn't transmitted to our servers. Cloud features are opt-in: only when you choose to sync does your session data upload to your private DashCAN Cloud account, visible only to you.

We don't sell or share your personal data with third parties, and you can export your logs (XLSX/CSV) and delete sessions at any time. See our Terms for details.

Orders, shipping & support

Where do you ship, how long does delivery take, and is shipping free?

We ship worldwide (to all destinations supported by our payment provider). Shipping is calculated at checkout by destination, and orders over €199 (about 70,000 Ft) qualify for free shipping.

Typical delivery is roughly 3-5 business days within Hungary and 5-10 business days internationally. For deliveries outside the EU, import duties and VAT may be charged by your local customs or courier on arrival. These aren't included in the price and are the recipient's responsibility.

What payment methods do you accept?

Payments are processed securely through Stripe, which supports major credit and debit cards and the wallet methods Stripe offers in your region. Prices are charged in EUR for most destinations and in HUF (Ft) for deliveries to Hungary, based on the country you select at checkout.

What is your returns and warranty policy?

DashCAN products carry a 12-month limited warranty against manufacturing defects (excluding damage from improper installation, misuse, water or unauthorised modification).

You can return an unused product in its original packaging within 14 days of delivery; refunds are processed within 14 business days of us receiving the return. Return shipping is the customer's responsibility unless the product is defective. See our Terms for full details, or contact us to start a return.

Troubleshooting

Why is the app not receiving data even though I've connected the device to the CAN bus?

  1. Make sure you're connected to the powertrain CAN bus and not another vehicle bus. See Technical Help for how to find the CAN High / CAN Low wires.
  2. If you're using the OBD interface, note that OBD/CAN communication is disabled in the Ignitron ECU by default. Open the ECU program and enable it (details on Technical Help).
  3. Make sure your ECU runs firmware V1.25 or newer, then import both custom CAN message files (Send and Receive). Download them and follow the ECU Configuration step in First Steps.
  4. Only if your interface sits on a short/standalone CAN segment that isn't already terminated, enable "Use 120 Ohm termination resistor" in the app under Settings ▸ General. Leave it OFF when you've tapped into the car's existing (already-terminated) CAN, as a third resistor can break communication. On v1.04 hardware there is no switch, so fit a physical 120 Ω resistor across CAN High and CAN Low only if that segment needs it.

I plugged DashCAN OBD into the car's OBD port (diagnostics work) but the app receives no data. Why?

A working factory OBD port doesn't mean the engine's powertrain CAN bus is wired to it. On many cars (notably VW/Audi/SEAT/Škoda 1.8 20VT models such as the Octavia RS) factory diagnostics run on the older K-line, which the Ignitron ECU doesn't support, and the powertrain CAN was never wired into the OBD connector.

You must wire the ECU's CAN High (pin 60) to OBD pin 6 and CAN Low (pin 58) to OBD pin 14 as a twisted pair (max 1.5 m). Pins 6 and 14 are often physically missing from the factory connector and must be added. Also remember OBD/CAN communication is disabled in the ECU by default and must be enabled. Why can't I connect to the device via Bluetooth?

  1. Make sure the DashCAN interface is actually powered. It needs switched 12 V, so turn the ignition on (or apply power to the wire-in / Apex harness).
  2. Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your phone/tablet.
  3. Approve every permission the app requests. On Android you must also grant the "Nearby devices" permission (Location on older versions), or the app can't scan for the interface; on iOS accept the Bluetooth prompt.
  4. The interface connects to only one device at a time, so close the app or disconnect on any other phone/tablet that may still be connected.
  5. Fully close and reopen the app and move closer to the device. The full permission walkthrough is in First Steps.

Why is my Bluetooth connection unstable?

  1. Keep the device away from electromagnetic sources such as relays, ignition coils and alternators.
  2. Improve the signal path: mount the interface high in the cabin with a clear line of sight to the phone/tablet, and avoid metal surfaces, the glove box and heated or metal-coated windshields (see Device Placement in First Steps).
  3. Keep the phone/tablet within a few metres of the device.
  4. If it persists, try another phone/tablet to rule out a device-specific issue.

Can I display data other than the 20 default gauges in the app?

Yes! The app shows up to 20 live values at a 50 Hz refresh rate as customisable gauges, plus CAN switches, combo gauges, data logging with XLSX export and OTA firmware updates.

Every channel is repurposable: open the gauge's settings (or the CAN Switch settings) in the app and rename it, then open the "Ignitron ECU" Windows program and map the matching data in the "Send custom CAN messages" or "Receive custom CAN messages" menu. The ECU Configuration step in First Steps walks through editing these CAN message files.

I've tried everything here and it still doesn't work. How do I get help?

Re-check the step-by-step guide for your product in First Steps and the wiring details in Technical Help. Make sure the app is up to date and that you've run the interface's over-the-air firmware update from the app.
