Fit Check

Is DashCAN OBD right for your car?

It plugs into the OBD port, but it's not a diagnostic scanner. It reads the CAN stream a standalone ECU broadcasts. Thirty seconds of honesty so you buy the right thing:

A Great Fit If
  • Your car runs a standalone ECU (like Ignitron) that broadcasts data as custom CAN messages
  • The OBD port's CAN pins are wired to the bus your ECU transmits on
  • You want plug-and-play: no loom changes, and it moves between cars in seconds
  • You want to log sessions and fire CAN switches without a laptop in the car
Not For You (Yet) If
  • Your car is stock: factory-ECU OBD-II diagnostics (PID polling) isn't supported yet
  • You expect fault-code scanning like a workshop diagnostic tool: that's not what DashCAN is for
Why Not A Dongle?

Same port as an ELM327. That's where the similarity ends.

A generic dongle asks the car polite diagnostic questions. DashCAN reads the raw stream your ECU is already shouting, and can talk back.

Generic ELM327 Dongle
  • Polls a handful of OBD-II diagnostic PIDs, a few times a second
  • Factory-defined parameters only
  • Read-only, cannot switch anything
  • Standalone ECUs usually don't answer OBD-II requests at all
DashCAN OBD
  • Listens to raw CAN frames at full bus speed
  • Any channel your ECU broadcasts: 20 at once, 50 updates/s
  • Writes too: CAN switches trigger real functions in the car
  • Built for standalone ECUs from day one
